Boston’s top 5 mobile startups (ranked by Mass. employees)

by Galen Moore

Mobile technology is a signature of Boston’s startup industry. It’s an important place to be. The percent of Internet use attributed to mobile devices, versus PCs, has grown to 37 percent, comScore reports. Advertisers this year are expected to spend $7.29 billion on mobile messages, according to eMarketer.

With that in mind, the BBJ Research Department offers a list of the area’s 20 largest mobile startups, ranked by Massachusetts employees. The slide show at right presents the top five.

The list includes relative newcomers like Mobiquity and Fiksu, but also names stalwarts like Verivo Software.

The full list, appearing on page 28 of this week’s print edition, includes each company’s address, the number of Massachusetts employees, the total employees, the year it was founded, the dollar amount of venture capital funding raised to date and the name of the chief executive.
