Verivo Software Unveils Open Mobile Computing Platform

Just about every enterprise IT organization to one degree or another is struggling with mobile computing to one degree or another, especially when it comes to integrating the applications that run on devices with existing backend enterprise services.
To help organizations address that issue across multiple mobile computing environment, Verivo Software this week launched Verivo Akula, an open mobile computing platform that creates a common enterprise computing backend for developers of mobile computing applications.
According to Verivo CEO Steve Levy, there is no shortage of mobile application development environments that will connect a mobile application to a backend enterprise service. The trouble is that those environments usually require the IT organization to commit to a single mobile computing application environment. Given the volatility of mobile computing it not particularly practical for most IT organizations to standardize on one development platform, which he says means it was on a matter of time before providers of mobile development environments moved to open their backend platforms to multiple development tools.
Rather than making a commitment to a specific environment, Levy says IT organizations should be able to tie any mobile computing development environment to their back end services. To achieve that Levy says Verivo Akula is designed to support transactional applications running both online and off using caching software that runs on the client to access an open API exposed by Verivo Akula.
While Levy says Verivo Software is happy to provide the platform for building a mobile computing application, Verivo Akula is a recognition that there is a lot of diversity in the world of mobile computing applications. Investing in back end middleware for each one of those mobile computing environments is just prohibitively expensive, says Levy. But once you start to decouple the front end mobile application from the back end service you create a common API for enterprise services that multiple types of mobile computing applications can more easily invoke.
Interest in mobile computing application is riding high in the enterprise. But what most organizations today don’t fully appreciate is the degree to which the mobile computing tail is about to wag the enterprise IT dog. Not only are the presentation layer more challenging, the applications themselves have to delivered via a series of lightweight modules that naturally step users through what are often a complicated set of business processes.
Most enterprise IT organizations today are a little short of that kind of application development talent, which is one reason why the drive to create a truly mobile enterprise is going take some time for most organizations to achieve.
In the meantime, however, there is a lot of effort being poured into the development of mobile applications that target a narrow use case, ranging from e-commerce to business intelligence. As IT organizations get more familiar with developing those applications it only makes sense that they would want to leverage an API to access backend services in a way that eliminates the need to rewrite the same code multiple times over.
